Full-Length Photos and DBS Certificates

With Spring in the air, we want to address a couple of blindspots we have often encountered on people’s profiles recently.

Firstly, it’s become apparent that many profiles are missing a Full Length picture entirely.

Many Costume departments won’t approve someone if a Full Length picture isn’t provided. Measurements only tell them half the picture - they like to see how you carry yourself, your posture and proportions.

That is why we encourage all artists to take a full set of “Current Look” photos when they refresh their photos (Full Length Front, and then Close-Up Front, Side & Back). “Current Look” photos are the most important photo category on your profile and are the photos most often sent to productions.

Full length photos are photos where we can see you stood from the knees-up. The same rules for taking good pictures still apply - take a well-framed photo in a light clean environment and aim for a plain background. Keep your expression, clothing, hair and make-up neutral to maximise your castability.

Be sure to not be too far away from the camera! “Full Length” doesn’t mean you should be the other side of the room! See the example below - the photo on the right hand side is the framing we like for a Full Length picture.

Secondly, many productions loom on the horizon.

At least one of these is a Major Television Series that requires all Supporting Artists to have a valid DBS Certificate uploaded to their profile in order to be considered for roles.

We encourage our artists to check their profile to ensure that their DBS Certificate is uploaded and has been approved.

If you haven’t got one, a new DBS Paper Certificate can be obtained from the GOV website here - they cost £18 and take about two weeks to arrive in the post. DBS Certificates are not mandatory to work as a Supporting Artists but they widen the amount of roles and productions you can be considered for.

In the UK Film & TV Industry, DBS Certificates are considered valid for 18 months after their issue date. This is true for both the Basic and the Enhanced DBS.

However, if you use the online DBS Update Service, a simple screenshot of your online DBS Platform will suffice instead of a brand new paper certificate. Please ensure your screenshot is high quality and includes all the same details that we would need to verify the paper certificate, including your name, the DBS issue date and the Certificate number.

If you have an issue regarding your DBS, be sure to email epcommunity@extra-people.com.
