Your Favourite Experiences on Set (Part Two)!
Last year, our blog spotlighting your favourite experiences on set was a popular morale-booster during the depths of the strikes.
As we close the curtain on 2024, we’d like to celebrate some more of your stories!
My favourite experience has to be being a part of the Roman army on the set of ‘Gladiator II’. Hundreds of us, in full costume and make-up and on horses, marching downhill towards about six cameras, preparing to fight, listening to Paul Mescal's speech on playback and chanting... wow. It was my first experience on a set and one I'll never forget, not just for the reality of all the ranks and roles, weapons, armour, centurion medals and standards represented, but for the mini Roman army military training I received from Rom Betts. The cinema is usually a transportive place, but I was marching with my fellow soldiers, looking through spears and standards at the sky, listening to that great speech and not believing my luck. Strength and honour!

I had a few days on ‘The Thursday Murder Club’. It was cold and I was shivering when Pierce Brosnan walked past. He asked if I would like a blanket and promptly got one for me. A lovely man, very attractive and kind!
- Denise
In ‘Ted Lasso’, I’m dressed as a security guard on the side of the pitch at the Crystal Palace ground. Between takes, I joked with the main actors about the word “W@%k£r” being shouted by the whole crowd at full blast and that they had never been called that before and how it wouldn’t be the last time.

For an upcoming TV series, I was mic’d up and given lines on the day! Subsequently I got invited to a recording studio to record an additional line! I was so thrilled that they liked my voice and that I had the opportunity to work with great crew and producers!- Cristina
Working with James Norton and Tim McInnerny on 'The Trial of Christine Keeler'. Just the three of us. I had a line. And it was my first gig! They made me feel incredibly welcome. All a bit surreal.

My favourite on set experience was ‘Saltburn’ because we were filming for 5 straight days and I made some of my best friends there. It felt like we were all going to school together and we just had loads of fun with the cast and crew. Everyone was just lovely and best part was one of the AD's knew EVERYONE's name, was just very intimate and special.

Well I never thought I would get on ‘The Crown’ but I received the enquiry to be a Courtier. I ended up getting to be the Queen’s (Emelda Staunton) righthand man in the last ever episode of the series! Thank you for the experience.- Trevor
Being chauffeur to Prince Charles in ‘The Crown!’
A certain Mr West had me suppressing laughs for most of the day! 😆- David
In ‘Peaky Blinders’, I had dialogue with Cillian Murphy. The 1st AD introduced me to him and he shook my hand. He was incredible charming. I was a regular on that series and had the pleasure of talking to him again when I played his real son’s Mum.
- Georgia
Filming the new ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’ film, and as another SA and I walked back to our start position in leafy Hampstead, Renee Zwelleger came up and introduced herself. She was utterly charming. Later in in the day during another conversation she remembered our names whilst enquiring if we were getting cold. The whole day was brilliant.

Around 2 weeks standing-in on ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 for one of the leads was probably the best experience this year. So much more involvement in the filming process. It's so amazing to see how the DOP and camera department work to find the best frame and photography. One of those memorable experiences.

Well, I have just had my very first experience being an Extra, I couldn't have asked for more. Being on set in a local harbour, with 70 pirates and all the film crew and cast was just amazing. I didn't expect to be working so close to the leading actors at one point. The film crew, staff, costume dept and the other Extra colleagues were all friendly and thoroughly enjoyed working with everyone for the day. It is a day I will never forget - and I got paid for it as well (result)!
